The art of making fine bourbon first took place on the site of the Woodford Reserve Distillery, a National Historic Landmark, in 1812.
The perfectly balanced taste of this Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is comprised of more than 200 detectible flavor notes, created through 5 key steps: iron-free, limestone filtered spring water, which is full of rich minerals that are key in WR unique fermentation process. The unique mash bill 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley: the high rye percentage gives WR a spicy character. The fermentation process happens in traditional cypress huge fermentors and lasts for up to 3-5 days, which is among the longest in the industry. Slower fermentation allows Woodford Reserve to develop a complex range of flavors. WR uses a dynamic flavor combination in the distillation process, crafted using both triple pot (3 stills produced in Scotland by Forsyths) distillation and double distillation in a column thumper still. Last but not least maturation in one of the oldest steam-heated barrel houses in Kentucky: here the hot and dry weather influences the wood/whiskey interaction and helps compounds to create flavors and complexity over the years of aging.
