The Dutch Bar Industry Awards, from Bartenders to Bartenders!
Inspired and supported by the famous Gouden Strik Awards (and maybe by the Academy Awards too), the Startenders Awards are a goliardic set of Awards “from bartenders to bartenders”. What makes a “Startender”? Skills like personality, hosting skills, creativity, the capacity to inspire others and make them also laugh; that’s what we aim to give them credit for.

"Where heroes become legend"

Young Talent

New stars are born in giant clouds of gas and dust, or nebulae, when gravity and temperature are so high to force dust into something new, bright and marvelous. In a very similar way, that’s how new Startenders are born, enduring the pressure and heat of the bar industry, the long hours, the crazy guests’ requests, the annoying managers/colleagues, to one day become a bright and marvelous overpaid barback!

Best Host

Hospitality, the clue is in the name! Be hospitable. Back in the days, a captain would spear a pineapple on a fence post outside his home to let his friends know of his safe return from sea. The pineapple was an invitation for them to visit, share his food and drink, and listen to tales of his voyage. The pineapple became the symbol of hospitality and gracious hosting.

Best Bar

The bar industry often refers to itself as a family, bartenders as siblings and bars as a second home. This prize is given to the bar in the Netherlands that best put in place the work ethics behind each of the Startenders Awards (creativity, hospitality, service, coziness), making it the preferred bar to go-to by the Dutch bar industry.

Most Fun & Entertaining Bartender

Risus for the Ancient Romans was the divine personifcation of laughter. We all know how serious being able to laugh in life is, and our industry is no exception; being able to make someone laugh at the bar, someone that might have had a tough day, is a great gift

Most Inspiring Bartender

(No, not the pole dancing master) We all had someone in our careers that inspired and led us, that made us love this job even more. This award is named after the most famous star when comes to navigation and directions, a prize given to someone bartenders look up to.

Most Creative Bartender

Is an interjection used to celebrate a discovery or invention. Eureka is a transliteration of an exclamation attributed to Ancient Greek mathematician & inventor Archimedes. Modern bartenders research and study, experiment and go the extra mile to create something special for their guests, all longing for that moment of enlightenment, when the lightbulb goes off!

The Fastest Bartender

Sometimes, looking up in the sky, you see a flash of light that runs amongst the stars, a fraction of a second and it’s gone. Sometimes, looking behind the bar, you see that same flash of light…

Hall of Fame

We are all standing on the shoulders of giants. People who shaped our industry into what it is now. Some of them retired , Some of them sitting at the great bar in the sky. Some of them still doing their thing here today. Not only bartenders, but researchers, brand ambassadors and industry professionals. All with 1 goal: to make are industry shine.

Best Brand Ambassador

Not all the Stars shine; some move to the Dark side and become… Dead Stars (or BAs!). In the bar industry we often use this expression to refer to former bartenders that stepped into the corporate world, sales reps and marketeer that hope to earn more money and to clean bars at the end of the shift NOMORE! We here award the most loved person on the Dark Side.
